What Are the Main Types of Adhesive Vinyl?
A 24" × 36" 3M Adhesive Vinyl is $114.99. Artwork prep is $14.99 per item. Printed in the USA in 48 hours and shipped nationwide, flat $10 shipping to any US address. That sheet is 3M IJ-35C calendared vinyl for flat surfaces; cast vinyl such as 3M IJ-180Cv3 is the choice for curves and vehicles.
Printed adhesive vinyl comes in two main types: calendared and cast. Calendared vinyl suits flat surfaces such as walls, windows, signs and boxes. Cast vinyl suits curves, rivets and vehicles, because it is thinner and conforms without pulling back. A laminate is a clear layer added over either one for protection.
The catalog names the films by product, so you can see what you are buying:
| Film | Type | Best for | Production |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3M IJ-35C | Calendared | Flat walls, windows, signs | 48 hours |
| 3M IJ-180Cv3 | Cast | Vehicles, curves, rivets | 48 hours |
| GF 830 AutoMark | Cast | Wrap panels, hoods, tailgates | 3 business days |

What Is Calendared Vinyl?
Calendared vinyl is made by rolling and stretching heated vinyl into a sheet, the way dough is rolled thin. The process is efficient, and the film is a little thicker and stiffer than cast. It holds flat and stays put on flat surfaces.
Because it was stretched in manufacturing, calendared film has some memory. Pushed hard over a deep curve, it can slowly pull back toward flat. That is why it is the choice for windows, walls, signs, boxes and other flat or gently curved surfaces, and not for wrapping a bumper.
3M IJ-35C is the calendared film on the adhesive vinyl, store hours decal and glass door decal pages.

When Should You Choose Cast Vinyl?
Choose cast vinyl for anything with curves, channels or rivets: car doors with body lines, truck tailgates, hoods, trailers and food trucks. Cast vinyl is made by pouring liquid vinyl onto a sheet and letting it set, so it starts relaxed. It is thin, conforms to shape, and stays where it is pressed.
3M IJ-180Cv3 is the cast option on decal pages such as car door decals and USDOT number decals. GF 830 AutoMark cast film is used for printed wrap vinyl, hood wraps and tailgate wraps.
Cast film is the one to use for vehicle graphics. Vehicle graphics take more care to install than flat decals; in San Antonio, Inline installs them, and elsewhere a local wrap installer can apply them.

What Does a Laminate Add?
A laminate is a clear film applied over the print. It protects the ink from scuffs, scratches, cleaning and sun, and it changes the finish to gloss or matte. On a decal that will be touched, washed or left outdoors, a laminate is what keeps it looking new.
Store hours decals and glass door decals ship with a gloss laminate. On other products, the laminate choice is shown on the product page where it is offered, such as laminated one way vision window film.
A short indoor promotion, a sign that comes down in a few weeks, or a graphic behind glass may not need a laminate. A graphic on a truck door or a busy entrance does.
Gloss and matte laminates look different in place. Gloss makes colors look deeper and is easy to wipe clean, but it reflects light, which can wash out a graphic facing a bright window or an overhead light. Matte cuts the glare and reads well from an angle, at the cost of slightly softer color. For a decal on a door read from several directions, matte is often easier to read; for a showy graphic on a vehicle, gloss usually looks richer.

How Do You Choose by Surface?
Choose the film by the surface first, then by how long it needs to last:
- Flat glass, inside or out: calendared vinyl for decals that stay, a window cling for messages that change, or perforated film to cover a whole pane and still see out.
- Painted walls: a wall graphic on low tack wall fabric, which peels off cleanly.
- Floors: an anti slip floor graphic made for foot traffic.
- Vehicles: cast vinyl, laminated.
- Signs and boxes: calendared vinyl.
Textured, dusty or freshly painted surfaces are hard for any adhesive. Clean the surface well and let new paint cure before applying vinyl. When in doubt, test a small scrap of the same film in a hidden spot first.
What Other Printed Vinyl Films Are There?
Beyond standard adhesive vinyl, the vinyl graphics catalog carries specialty films for specific jobs. Each one is printed in 48 hours after proof approval:
| Film | What it does | Starts at |
|---|---|---|
| High performance vinyl | Repositionable adhesive | $74.99 |
| Clear vinyl | Print on a clear film | $74.99 |
| Backlit vinyl | Translucent, for lit boxes | $79.99 |
| One way window film | Perforated, see out | $54.99 |
Each starting price is the smallest size listed for that film; the product page prices larger sizes. Repositionable film can be lifted and moved during application, which helps when you are working alone or on a large piece. Clear film lets the surface show through around the design, useful on glass where you want no white box. Backlit film lets light pass through evenly for a lit sign box or a display case. Perforated film covers a whole pane while people inside can still see out.
How Do You Remove Adhesive Vinyl Later?
Remove adhesive vinyl slowly, at a low angle, with a little warmth. A hair dryer or heat gun on low softens the adhesive so the film lifts in one piece instead of tearing. Peel back on itself, close to the surface, rather than pulling straight out.
Clean any adhesive left behind with a citrus based remover or isopropyl alcohol, and test the cleaner on a hidden spot first, especially on painted walls and vehicle paint.
Calendared film can get brittle after long outdoor use and come off in small pieces. Cast film tends to come off more cleanly. For more detail, see how to remove stickers and decals without damage.
What Should You Know About Cut Decals?
Cut decals ship on the full vinyl sheet with the cut lines plotted. You remove the extra vinyl around the design, called weeding, before you apply it. Most cut applications need transfer tape to move the design onto the surface in one piece, and transfer tape is not included.
Contour cut decals, cut to the shape of your artwork, carry a one time setup fee per design, shown on the product page. A rectangle cut does not.
A custom vinyl decal prints in 48 hours. A 12" × 12" 3M IJ-35C Custom Vinyl Decal is $52.09. Artwork prep is $14.99 per item. Printed in the USA in 48 hours and shipped nationwide, flat $10 shipping to any US address.
How Do You Apply Adhesive Vinyl?
Apply vinyl to a clean, dry surface at a comfortable room temperature. Clean the surface with isopropyl alcohol, let it dry, and position the graphic with tape hinges before you peel the backing. Work from the center out with a squeegee to push out air.

What Should You Check on Vinyl Proofs?
Check first for a decal ordered for the wrong side of the glass. A decal read from outside but applied inside has to be printed mirrored, or reverse printed. Say which side it goes on, and check the proof for it.
Next, check for a cut decal with thin parts. Hairline strokes and tiny letters are hard to weed and can tear when you lift the transfer tape. Keep lines and letters thick enough to handle.
Also check for the wrong film for the surface: calendared film ordered for a curved truck panel. Tell us the surface, and pick cast for vehicles.
How Do You Order Adhesive Vinyl?
Choose the product for your surface, pick the film and size, and send your artwork. Artwork prep is $14.99 per item if you send a phone photo or a ChatGPT image, and a free proof comes with every order.
Vinyl, decals and window graphics print in 48 hours after proof approval, and wrap vinyl in 3 business days. Each product ships for a flat $10 to any US address.
