There is no fixed letter height in the federal rule. 49 CFR 390.21 says the marking must be readable from 50 feet away in daylight, in letters that contrast sharply with the background, and leaves the size to you. In practice 2 inch letters are the common floor: our 6 by 24 inch preset gives a 2 inch USDOT line with the name above it, and the 8 by 30 gives 3 inch letters for a cab or a trailer that is read from farther away.
