A decal is 3M cast vinyl bonded to the door: thin, shaped to the panel, no edge to lift at highway speed, and it stays until you remove it. A magnet comes off in a second so the truck is plain on the weekend, but it needs a flat steel panel, comes off for washing, and has a visible edge. Yes, including brush washes, once the vinyl has set for a few days. Laminated cast vinyl is what full vehicle wraps are made of, and a wrapped vehicle is washed like any other. Keep a pressure washer wand two feet back and never aim it at an edge. Hand washing is kindest to the laminate. A touchless wash with a strong pre-soak is fine for the film; the only real risk to a door decal is a high-pressure jet held at its edge.
Not on factory paint in good condition. 3M IJ-180Cv3 is the same cast film used for vehicle wraps, and it comes off clean with a little heat from a heat gun or a sunny afternoon. Removal pulls the film, not the clear coat. The exception is a repaint or a panel with peeling clear coat, where a weak paint layer can come up with anything that sticks to it. If your truck has been repainted, tell us, and consider a magnet for that door.
An 18 by 18 inch decal is the usual pick for a full-size pickup front door: it clears the handle and the body line and reads across a parking lot. A 24 by 24 fills a van or box truck door, and a 24 by 12 is the shape for a name and phone number in one long line. Measure the flat area of the door between the handle and the body crease; that is the box the decal has to fit in. Keep the decal on the flat, not over the crease.

What size fits a car or truck door
Measure the flat area of the door below the window and above any body line or molding. That is the space your logo gets. Width across, height down, then leave about 2 in clear on each side.

Install basics on a door panel
- 1Wash the door, then wipe the area with rubbing alcohol. Fresh wax or sealant has to come off first.
- 2Measure from the door edge and the window line to center the decal, and mark the top corners with masking tape.
- 3Hinge the decal with a strip of tape along the top, lift it, peel the liner, and lower it back down.
- 4Squeegee from the center out in overlapping strokes. Work slowly over any body line so the vinyl lays into it.
- 5Press every edge hard. Match the position on the other door with the same measurements.
- 6Wait 24 hours before a car wash. Avoid pressure washing at the edges.
