In practice, size and material. A sticker is small, printed on thin paper or vinyl, and handed out or stuck on a laptop. A decal is a bigger, longer-lived piece on vehicle-grade vinyl, cut to a shape and applied to glass, a door, a wall or a truck. Both are printed and both stick. What we make on this page is a decal: 3M vinyl, laminated, contour cut, sized in inches, and meant to stay put outdoors. Small sheet stickers are a different product that we do not list yet.

3M IJ-180Cv3. It is a cast vinyl, made as a liquid film rather than rolled thin, so it lies down over curves, rivets and door seams and stays there. IJ-35C is a film for flat surfaces; it is fine on flat glass or a flat tailgate, but it will lift off a curve over time. Both are rated for up to 5 years outdoors. Add the laminate on anything that lives outside, because that is the layer that takes car washes and sun. If you are not sure which surface you have, send a photo with your order.

Cut to the outline of your artwork instead of to a rectangle. Our name for it on the page is contour cut: the cutter follows the edge of your logo, mascot or lettering, so the decal is the shape of the design with no background around it. Rectangle is the other choice, trimmed square to the size you pick, with the background printed. Contour cut is priced on top of the film and the page does the math. The size you pick is the box the shape is cut from, so a 12 by 12 leaf is a leaf that fits inside 12 by 12.

Yes. The vinyl is a plastic film and the print is on the film itself, not on paper, so rain, car washes and a garden hose do nothing to it. Add the laminate for anything outdoors or on a vehicle: it covers the printed surface so scuffs and UV take it less. Without laminate the print is still waterproof, it just scratches more easily. The one place water matters is application: apply to a clean, dry surface and give it a day or two before the first wash.

Gloss or matte laminate adds +$2.66/sq ft on either film, and contour cut is priced on top of the film; the page does the math for the size you type.
