How to Fold a Canopy Tent: Steps, Weight, and the Bag

How do you fold a pop-up hex canopy tent?
Take walls and flags off, lower the legs, and have two people walk the hex frame closed, then bag it dry. A 10x15 kit is about 60.5 lb and a 10x20 is about 80 lb. A 10x10 full custom canopy with the V6 frame from Inline Graphics is $973.69, with flat $10 shipping per product.
Leave the weights on while the frame is still a shelter. Strip everything else first, or the cloth and the clamps fight the scissors as the frame comes in. These steps are general practice for a pop-up hex frame, the kind with scissor rails and telescoping legs. Our frames do not ship with a printed instruction sheet, so if a step does not match your frame, stop and contact us before forcing anything.
- Take off the walls and any tent flags while the canopy is still standing. Unfasten velcro loops and lift flag clamps off the legs. Do this before anyone moves a foot.
- Leave stakes, ropes and sandbags in place for now. Until the frame is closed, it can still catch wind like a sail.
- Lower the telescoping legs one at a time, evenly, to their shortest height, with a second person steadying the frame.
- Release the corner locks. Each leg has a slider near the top that holds the frame open, usually with a push button or pull pin. Release it on every leg and let the slider drop, then loosen the top so the fabric is not pulled tight across the scissor rails. Nobody pushes until every lock is released.
- With two people on opposite sides, walk the frame closed. Each person pushes evenly. Keep hands on the outer legs, not inside the crossing rails.
- Once the frame is closed and standing upright, take off the weights, then pull any stakes and coil the ropes.
- Leave a dry top on the frame if the frame closes and bags cleanly that way. If the top is wet or bunches in the rails, take it off, dry it, and fold it beside the frame.
- Bag it once the fabric is dry. Use the standard carry bag that comes with the frame kit, or a wheeled bag if you ordered one.
Keep fingers out of the scissor joints the whole time. The rails cross as the footprint shrinks, and a hand in that X is how people get pinched. If you are setting the same tent up, the 10x10 canopy install guide runs the sequence the other way. This page starts at the end of the day.

How heavy is the kit you are about to fold and carry?
A 10x15 full package is about 60.5 lb, including the frame, canopy, ropes, stakes, and carry bag. A 10x20 full package is about 80 lb, and two people are recommended for that size. The 10x20 assembles 235 in wide by 120 in deep, so the walk-in close covers more ground than a 10x10 even though the motion is the same.
On a 10x10, the frame weight depends on the tier. The V6 frame is aluminum, 40 mm hex legs, 51 lb. The V4 Lite frame is anodized aluminum, 45 mm hex legs, 32 lb. Those are frame weights, not a promise that the bag in your hand is only the frame. The canopy, stakes, and ropes ride with it. The V5 frame is powder-coated steel with 32 mm square legs at 48 lb, and the V4 steel hex frame is 52 lb. Leg shape and the rest of the tier comparison are in the steel and aluminum canopy frame guide.
Frame upgrades are 10x10 only. A 10x15 or 10x20 ships as the hex frame in that full kit, at about 60.5 lb or about 80 lb for the package. Plan the carry before you order the wider tent. Two people for the close is general practice on any of these hex frames. The 80 lb package is the one that should not be a one-person job.
What bag does the tent use, and what does a wheeled bag cost?
A wheeled carry bag for a 10 ft frame is $171.19. Every frame kit already includes a standard carry bag, plus ropes and stakes. The wheeled bag is the option for a long parking row or a storage room downstairs. For 15 ft it is $192.59. For 20 ft it is $213.99. One 10x10 full custom canopy with the V6 frame and a carry bag with wheels, as a configured tent, is $1,137.69. That figure is the tent and the wheeled bag together. It is not the standalone bag price added in your head to a different build.
The bag only helps if the folded frame actually fits the way that frame is meant to pack. If the top bunches when the frame closes, take it off and fold it separately. Forcing a half-folded top into the sleeve is how zippers split and how a damp corner gets sealed in. Hardware for a replacement bag, a replacement 10x10 V6 frame, and sandbags is on the canopy tent hardware page. The tent itself, in 10x10, 10x15, and 10x20, is on the canopy tent hub.

Shipping is a flat $10 per product. The tent kit is one product, so the standard bag does not add a second shipping charge. A wheeled bag ordered as its own hardware line is its own product. Ground transit is about 3 business days. The V6 tent is produced in 3 to 4 business days after proof approval. A V4 Lite or other upgraded 10x10 frame takes about 2 weeks. Order on the 10x10 custom canopy tent page.
What should you do if a joint sticks, or the canopy is wet?
Two people have to walk a stuck joint closed again. Forcing it is a common mistake. Open the frame back out a short distance, look for a velcro tab, a flag clamp, a rope, or a bite of fabric in the rail, and then walk it closed again with both people moving together. Do not put a hand between the crossing bars to "help" the joint. Do not jump on a leg or kick a slider.
Packing the tent wet is the other common mistake. Dry the top before it goes in the bag. Shake off standing water, open the fabric where you can, and give it air. The cloth is 6 oz weatherproof polyester. The package listing calls the tent fabric waterproof and UV-resistant. Seams can still hold water, and wind-driven rain can wet the inside. A sealed wet pack is how mildew starts, and it is harder to fold the next morning when the cloth has stiffened.
If you added a full wall or a half wall, those panels come off before the close and should dry flat too. A 10x10 full wall is 113 x 78 in. Folding it into the frame bag while it is soaked just hides the moisture. Sandbags that were filled on site stay out of the canopy bag. Empty them or carry them as their own load. A 4-piece sandbag set is $139.09 and is fillable on site. It is not part of the $973.69 tent.
Which frames do these folding steps fit?
The walk-in close above is for a pop-up hex frame, including the 51 lb V6, and it also fits the V4, the V4 Lite, and the V3 on a 10x10, plus the hex frame that comes with a 10x15 or a 10x20. The V5 is the exception on leg shape. It is powder-coated steel with square legs, 32 mm, at 48 lb, with a 1 year warranty. Treat its sliders the same way, fingers clear and no forcing, and contact us if its sliders release differently from the steps above.
We sell the tents, the tops, the walls, the half walls, the tent flag kit, the sandbags, the bags, and the frames. We do not sell tent cleaning, repair, rental, or a setup crew. Folding and packing are yours to do. Nothing on this page is a wind rating. We do not publish one. Do not try to wait out worsening weather. Pack up ahead of strong wind or a storm while it is still safe to handle the frame, and if you hear thunder, leave the tent and get to a substantial building or a hard-topped vehicle, as the National Weather Service lightning guidance advises.
Production on a V6 canopy is 3 to 4 business days after you approve the proof. Approve on a weekday before 12 PM Central and production starts the next business day. Design is included on every canopy order, and the AI image fee is waived. The proof is emailed after the order. Nothing prints until you approve it. Printed in the USA. Flat $10 ground shipping for the tent.

No. Dry the top before it goes in the bag. The fabric is weatherproof polyester, and a wet pack is a common mistake. Seams and pooled water stay damp even when the surface feels fine.

Stop. Do not force it, and keep fingers out of the joint. Open that section back a little, check that a wall, a flag clamp, or a snagged top is not holding it, and walk it closed again with two people.
