How Do You Choose Between Indoor and Outdoor Signs?

An 11 x 17 inch foam board sign is $64.99 for indoor use, an 18 x 24 inch coroplast yard sign is $64.99 for temporary outdoor use, and a 10 x 14 inch aluminum sign is $59.99 for permanent outdoor spots. Foam board and acrylic stay indoors. All are printed in the USA with flat $10 shipping.

Decide where the sign lives first, then how long it stays. Indoor for days or weeks: foam board or styrene. Indoor for years: GatorFoam, ACM or acrylic. Outdoor for weeks: coroplast or a vinyl banner. Outdoor for years: aluminum or ACM. Somewhere damp, or outside for a short job: PVC.

The wrong pick fails in a predictable way. A paper faced foam board sign left outside curls after rain, and a coroplast yard sign in a law office lobby looks temporary. Match the board to the spot and both problems disappear.

How Much Do Indoor and Outdoor Signs Cost?

Indoor and outdoor signs are priced by size and material, and the location should decide the material, not the budget. The table above lists each product's starting size and price. Each product page opens on a common size and prints the full price sentence; two that show the indoor and outdoor ends of the range:

  • An 18" × 24" Foam Board Sign is $74.99. Artwork prep is $14.99 per item. Printed in the USA in 3 business days and shipped nationwide, flat $10 shipping to any US address.
  • A 12" x 18" Aluminum Sign is $74.89. Artwork prep is $14.99 per item. Printed in the USA in 3 business days and shipped nationwide, flat $10 shipping to any US address.

Size moves the total more than material. Printing a second side, adding grommets, holes or stakes, and choosing a larger panel all show on the product page before you pay. AI image to print makes your existing file print ready for $14.99 per item, and Design it for me is $29.99 with two revisions, free on an item of $499 or more.

What Counts as an Outdoor Location?

Any spot that rain, sprinklers, direct sun or freezing nights can reach is outdoors for a sign, even under a roof. That includes covered porches, open air walkways, carports, loading docks with roll up doors, and the inside of a sunny storefront window.

Three questions settle the gray areas:

  1. Can water touch it? Wind blows rain under awnings, and sprinklers soak the bottom of anything near a lawn.
  2. Does direct sun hit it for hours? A window display in the afternoon sun gets hot and bright like an outdoor sign.
  3. Does the temperature swing? A garage or warehouse that is cold at night and warm by noon is hard on paper faced boards.

If the answer to any one is yes, choose an outdoor material. It removes the guesswork and the reprint.

Which Sign Materials Belong Indoors?

Foam board, styrene, GatorFoam and acrylic belong indoors. We sell each of them for indoor use, and each does its indoor job well.

Foam board is a 3/16 inch foam core with a paper facing: light, stiff enough for an easel, and the standard for event welcome signs, seating charts and presentation boards. Styrene is a thin, semi rigid plastic, a low cost rigid sign for short term indoor use such as shelf talkers and frame inserts. GatorFoam is a dense board with a wood fiber facing that will not warp, for wall signs that last. Acrylic is 1/4 inch clear acrylic with a UV print, the premium lobby and office sign, with chrome standoffs as an option.

A conference organizer can put a foam board welcome sign on an easel at the hall door for a two day summit and recycle it after. A dental office can hang an acrylic logo behind its reception desk and keep it for years. Both are the right material for their jobs.

Which Sign Materials Hold Up Outdoors?

Coroplast, PVC, ACM and aluminum hold up outdoors, each for a different length of time. Coroplast is 4 mm corrugated plastic made for outdoor yard signs on wire H-stakes: open houses, campaigns, job sites. PVC is water resistant and built for long term indoor use and short term outdoor use.

For signs that stay outside, metal is the answer. ACM is a 3 mm aluminum composite panel, weatherproof and made for permanent outdoor and indoor signs. Aluminum is a .040 inch sheet that will not rust and carries a 5+ year outdoor durability guarantee, the standard for parking, address, gate and regulatory signs.

Whatever the panel, outdoor hardware matters. Use stainless or coated screws, set posts firmly, and keep signs clear of sprinkler spray. Our guide to how long outdoor signs last by material goes deeper.

When Does a Vinyl Banner Make More Sense?

A vinyl banner makes more sense when the message is large, temporary, or needs to roll up and travel. A rigid sign tops out at 24 x 36 inches on most of our board pages, while a banner runs from 2 x 4 feet to 10 x 20 feet and hangs from grommets on a fence, rail or wall.

Our 13 oz standard vinyl is weather resistant and made for outdoor use, and it works indoors just as well. The product page opens on a common size: A 6' × 3' 13oz Standard Custom Printed Banner is $133. Artwork prep is $14.99 per item. Printed in the USA in 3 business days and shipped nationwide, flat $10 shipping to any US address.

Indoors, a vinyl banner is the low cost way to cover a big wall: a gym, a church hall, a warehouse or a trade show back wall. Hang it from grommets on hooks or zip ties, and choose a size that fills the wall space without crowding the edges.

On a chain link fence or any open, windy spot, choose a mesh banner. It is perforated so roughly 30 percent of the wind passes through while the message stays readable: A 6' × 3' Mesh Banner is $154. Artwork prep is $14.99 per item. Printed in the USA in 3 business days and shipped nationwide, flat $10 shipping to any US address.

What Should You Check Before Approving the Artwork?

Check the material against the location, the hardware against the mount, and the text against the reading distance before you approve the free digital proof. Nothing prints until you approve it.

  1. Material and spot. If any part of the location is outdoors, confirm the order is not foam board, styrene, GatorFoam or acrylic.
  2. Hardware. Grommets for hanging boards and banners, holes for aluminum, stakes for coroplast.
  3. Reading distance. Outdoor signs are read from farther away. A common rule is about one inch of capital letter height for every ten feet.
  4. Sun and contrast. Bright sun washes out pale colors. Use dark text on a light background or the reverse, never two mid tones.

How Do You Order the Right Sign Material?

Pick the material from the table, open its product page, choose the size, sides and hardware, upload your file and approve the free proof. Coroplast prints the next business day; every other board and banner prints in 3 business days. Each product ships for a flat $10 to any US address.

Indoor starts on the foam board or acrylic page. Outdoor starts on the 18 x 24 inch yard sign or aluminum sign page. For every board side by side, read our sign materials guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Foam board is the standard short term indoor sign, starting at $64.99 for 11 x 17 inches. For a sign that stays on a wall for years, choose GatorFoam, which will not warp, or 1/4 inch clear acrylic, starting at $84.99 for 12 x 12 inches.

For a temporary sign on a stake, use 4 mm coroplast, starting at $64.99 for 18 x 24 inches. For a permanent sign on a post or wall, use .040 aluminum, which will not rust and carries a 5+ year outdoor durability guarantee, starting at $59.99 for 10 x 14 inches.

Not foam board, styrene, GatorFoam or acrylic: we sell those for indoor use. Rain, sprinklers and sun break down a paper faced board quickly. If the sign may end up outside even for a day, order PVC, coroplast or a vinyl banner instead.

Yes. Coroplast, PVC, ACM, aluminum and vinyl banners all work indoors. ACM and aluminum make durable lobby and warehouse signs, and a vinyl banner hangs on any wall with grommets.

Treat it as outdoors. Wind blows rain under a roof, humidity reaches every board, and sun hits a porch for part of the day. Choose PVC, coroplast, ACM or aluminum for a covered entry, not foam board.

Coroplast yard signs print the next business day after proof approval. Foam board, PVC, GatorFoam, ACM, aluminum, acrylic and vinyl banners print in 3 business days. Every product ships for a flat $10 to any US address.
