Which Feather Flag Base Should You Choose?
A Large 14ft Feather Angled Flag is $224.69. Sizes run Small 9ft to X-Large 18ft, $203.29 to $267.49. Artwork prep is $14.99 per item. Printed in the USA the next business day and shipped nationwide, flat $10 shipping to any US address. Grass uses the included spike; pavement needs a cross or square base.
Choose the base for the ground the flag will stand on. A ground spike goes into grass and soft ground. A cross base stands on concrete, asphalt and indoor floors. A water bag holds a cross base down in wind. A square base is a heavy flat plate for any hard surface.
Every flag and pole kit ships with a ground spike. The other bases change the kit total, and the product page shows the exact figure for each before you order.
| Base | Best ground | Holds in wind |
|---|---|---|
| Ground spike (in the kit) | Grass, soft ground | Good when driven deep |
| Cross base | Pavement, indoor floors | Light on its own |
| Cross base with water bag | Pavement, outdoors | Good once filled |
| Square base | Any hard surface | Good, heavy steel plate |
| Cross base plus ground stake | Both, swap as you go | Depends on the base in use |
A feather angled flag kit starts at $203.29 for the Small 9 ft size, printed in the USA the next business day after proof approval and shipped for a flat $10 to any US address.

When Should You Use a Ground Spike?
Use the ground spike whenever the flag stands in grass or soft dirt: lawns, parks, sports fields, farmers markets on grass and the strip in front of a business. It is the base in every kit price, so on grass there is nothing to add.
Drive the spike in straight and deep, then seat the pole in the spike. The spike lets the flag turn with the wind, which keeps the fabric from fighting it.
A spike is the wrong base for hard or very rocky ground, where it cannot go in far enough to hold. It is also no use on a parking lot, a sidewalk or a gym floor. For those, choose one of the bases below.
After rain, check the spike during the day. Wet ground softens, and a flag that stood straight at setup can start to lean by afternoon. Push the spike back down, or move it a few inches to firmer ground.
When Is a Cross Base the Better Choice?
Choose a cross base when the flag stands on a hard surface: pavement, concrete, tile, carpet or a trade show floor. It is four aluminum legs that fold out from a center post, and the pole seats in the center.
A cross base alone is light. Indoors, where there is no wind, that is fine. Outdoors, add weight. That is what the water bag is for.
If the same flag works a grass market on Saturday and a store floor on Monday, choose the cross base plus ground stake option. You get both bases and swap them as the ground changes.

What Does the Water Bag Do?
The water bag is a fillable ring that sits over the legs of a cross base and holds it down. Empty, it packs flat. Filled with water or sand at the site, it gives a light cross base the weight it needs to stand outdoors in a breeze.
Fill it fully. A half filled bag shifts and lets the base rock. Drain it before you pack, so it does not leak in your car.
A square base is the other answer for pavement. It is a flat steel plate with a socket for the pole and a carry slot. It needs no filling, which makes it simple, but it is heavy to carry. On the teardrop flag page, the square base is listed as a 22 lb steel plate.

Does Every Feather Flag Use the Same Hardware?
The base types are the same across the flag styles, and each flag has its own pole set. Feather angled, feather convex and teardrop flags use a fiberglass and aluminum pole set. Rectangle flags use an aluminum pole set. Every flag and pole kit ships with a ground spike and a carry bag.
| Flag | Heights | Kit starts at |
|---|---|---|
| Feather angled | 9 to 18 ft | $203.29 |
| Feather convex | 9 to 18 ft | $192.59 |
| Teardrop | 7 to 13.5 ft | $203.29 |
| Rectangle | 8.5 to 15 ft | $320.99 |
The Econo feather flag is a single 16 ft size, printed on one side, with the pole set and ground spike in the kit. It starts at $213.99.
How Is a Tent Mounted Flag Different?
A tent mounted flag needs no base at all. A tent flag kit clamps a feather flag to the leg of a hex frame canopy tent with a hex clamp connector, so the tent is the base. A Tent Flag Kit with a 10.5 ft medium feather flag and the flag holder is $224.69. Printed in the USA in 3 to 4 business days and shipped nationwide, flat $10 shipping to any US address.
A tent flag moves the wind load onto the tent leg. Weight that leg before the flag goes on, and check the clamp after setup.
Use a tent mounted flag when your booth space is tight or the event does not allow freestanding flags in the aisle. Use a freestanding flag when you want it away from the tent, at the edge of a lot or at a corner where traffic turns.
What Should You Check Before the First Event?
Check the ground at the event, not just at home. A market on grass one week can be on a parking lot the next. Read the vendor packet, or ask the organizer, whether stakes are allowed and whether the space is grass or pavement.
Assemble the whole flag once at home: pole sections, flag sleeve, base. Pole sections fit in order, and learning the order in a calm driveway beats learning it with customers waiting.
Bring the right base, and bring weight for it. A cross base with an empty water bag, and nothing to fill it with, is no better than a cross base alone.
How Do You Pack and Store Flag Hardware?
Pack the hardware so every piece comes back. The soft carry bag in the kit holds the pole sections and the flag. Bases travel better in their own bag or bin, because a cross base leg or a steel plate can scuff the printed fabric.
Keep a simple checklist taped inside the bin:
- Pole sections, counted, in order.
- Flag, rolled rather than folded, so creases do not set.
- Ground spike.
- Cross base and its center post, if you use one.
- Water bag, drained and dry.
- A small funnel or jug for filling the bag at the site.
Dry the flag before you store it. A flag packed wet after a rainy market can stain or smell. Hang it indoors overnight, then roll it into the bag.
Check the pole sections each season. A bent or cracked section changes how the flag hangs and can snap in wind. Replacement is simpler between seasons than on the morning of an event. If only the print is worn and the poles and base are fine, order flag only and keep the hardware.
What Should You Check on Flag Proofs?
Check first for a phone number or a small line of text low on the flag. On a feather or teardrop flag, the bottom narrows and sits near the ground. Keep the name and main message in the wide upper part, where people see it over cars and crowds.
Next, check for a single sided flag with a word that will read backward from behind. Single sided flags show a mirror image on the back. If people pass both faces, choose double sided or keep the text bold enough that the mirror is not a problem.
How Do You Order Flag Hardware With Your Print?
Order the base in the same order as the flag. On the flag page, choose the height, the print sides and the base. A free proof comes with every order, and nothing prints until you approve it. Artwork prep is $14.99 per item if you send a phone photo or a ChatGPT image.
Flags print the next business day after approval and ship with their hardware for a flat $10 per product to any US address. If you already own a pole kit and base, order flag only and reuse them.
Frequently Asked Questions
A ground spike. Every flag and pole kit, starting at $203.29, ships with the printed flag, a fiberglass and aluminum pole set, a ground spike and a standard soft carry bag. Other bases replace or join the spike and change the kit total.
A cross base or a square base. A ground spike cannot go into concrete or asphalt. A cross base with a water bag adds weight in wind, and a square base is a flat steel plate that sits on any hard surface.
Outdoors, yes in most cases. A cross base alone is light, and a filled water bag ring sits over its legs and holds it down in wind. Indoors, on a still floor, the cross base alone is usually enough.
Yes. Order the cross base plus ground stake option, and swap bases as you move. The spike goes into grass and soft ground; the cross base stands on floors, pavement and concrete.
No. Flag only is the printed replacement graphic for a pole kit you already own. It ships without the pole, the spike or the bag, so reuse the base you have.
Feather flags print the next business day after you approve the proof, then ship for a flat $10 to any US address. The base ships with the flag in the same order.
